What to Look for When Hiring a Jazz Band

By Andrew P Southern

When you hire a jazz band to perform live, it should be one that suits the event. There are one or two factors that indicate whether a band is suitable for an event or not. Consider these aspects before you select one of the jazz band in your area:

The Look

One of the most vital aspects to consider at when hiring a jazz band is their uniform. Many jazz bands will have a uniform they wear when they perform. The uniform should suit the event for which they'll be booked for. For instance, if you would like to hire the band for a company event, the ideal look for it'll be formal attire that gives the performers a stylish and smart appearance. On the other hand, if the event is not as formal an occasion, the band can wear casual and colourful uniforms.

The amount of space they need

Find out how many in the band will be performing. Depending on that, you can work out what kind of space will have to be set aside at the venue for the band to play. This is a very important consideration that may get forgotten about. The band should be given a place where the acoustics are optimal so the music can be heard everywhere. If the event is being handled by a pro event planner, inform them about where you need the band to play.

Hire Costs and Booking Fees

Most jazz bands for hire charge costs according to a typical rate. As jazz is a specific kind of music that takes many years to polish, it is possible the band you hire may charge a bit more than a band that doesn't specialise in a certain style of music. Remember if you are passionate about having jazz music performed at your event, paying a bit more will be well worth the money.

Band Performance

When hiring a jazz band, listen to them perform. Some will provide tapes of their music. Though this will give you an idea of what they are like, you should ideally hear them live. That way you'll see whether their style suits your requirements. If it is not feasible to see them perform, ask for a video recording or look on Youtube of prior performances.

Also, ask if the band is comfortable playing requested songs or if they perform only a certain set of songs. Primarily based on this and what is needed for the event, you can book the band. It's important to find out the experience the band has of playing live and the kind of events that they have played previously. Ideally the band you want to be hiring should be one that has been playing for a few years.
