The Serge Lutens Fashion Empire

By Lucile Brooks

Serge Lutens, originally born in France, had his hand in everything from photography to creating a fragrance and fashion designing. In his career he worked for Vogue and as a photographer for a popular Japanese cosmetics company by the name of Shiseido. Through his career Lutens managed to turn his name into a personalized brand that is recognizable all over the world.

At the ripe age of 14 he began his career as a makeup artist and stylist. From there he had his hand in the creation of Christian Dior in the 1960s, acted as art director for 15 years for Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido in the 1980s, and eventually created his own brand in the late 1990s.

Serge started to created his fragrance house in the late 1990s and launched his first in 2000. His fragrance house is now sold in various lines throughout department stores and boutiques. The fragrance house includes an export and exclusive line that can also be purchased online.

In 2005 he furthered his brand by launching a cosmetics line. The line includes everything from blush, concealer, eyeliner, and lipstick. The line is inspired by his experience as a makeup artist.

Lutens added another notch to his creative belt when he became an author in 1992. He created a book based on photography with a heavy hand from his experience as art director at Shiseido. His first book was available in 16 colors. It was only natural that he follow up his first book with his second in 1998 known as a deluxe edition.

By branding himself Serge was not only able to create his own fashion brand, he also strengthened and created depth to other fashion lines. There are many ways to describe this artist extraordinaire as he continues to innovate fashion.
