RiRi announces new clothing brand

By Francesca De Roux

The indomitable Rihanna adds yet another string to her bow in 2012 with the rumour of a new clothing line confirmed by the lady herself. She has managed to avoid leaking details of the who, what, where and when but has knowingly cranked into motion the gears of a tabloid feeding frenzy by stating that a clothing line is likely to be released in the near future and that production is under way.

What is it with singers and their increasingly predominant inability to stick to what they know? Rihanna is a great singer, performer and clothes-horse but do we really need her teensy-tiny outfits unleashed upon the world in a veritable Vesuvius of spangles and latex? What actual person would wear something that Rihanna can wear, and pull it off without resembling A) a mental patient or B) a hooker?

Since making a comeback from that awards-ceremony-cum-relationship-disaster, Rihanna has ditched Chris Brown in 2009 and even had the class to collaborate with him this year to show that this lady can't be stopped by anybody, not least a no-good ex-boyfriend. Her global takeover since 2005 has been only slightly hindered by inevitable malicious rumours of crisis and breakdown, and some pretty unsupportive fan responses. It seems now that the globally acclaimed artist is truly unstoppable.

The new clothing line will be part of the bigger, better, stronger RiRi brand, who has overcome relationship woes and violence to prove herself once more the independent and dynamic pop culture Titan she always set out to be. Named the most downloaded digital artist of all time this year, she has starred in her first major film role with Battleship, playing possibly the hottest FBI agent the world has witnessed.

I might sound bitter and I wish to give this popstar the commendation that she deserves as a black woman who has done good. She has overcome public humiliation and a domestically violent relationship with her ex-partner to continue on the path to meteoric fame with her wonderful voice and versatile trend-setting style. But it wouldn't surprise me if in 2013 I could nip down to the shops and buy myself a jumbo pack of RiRi bog-roll. At that point I think I really will give up.
