Ideas For Affordable Framed Artwork

By Lucile Jacobs

Nothing can liven up a room quite the way a piece of art can. Good art can be expensive, so if you're not making a lot of money, you probably find that the wall that begs for some kind of decoration has to stay bare for a while so that you can pay the bills first. With a little creativity, however, you can create a stunning focal point in your room with affordable framed artwork. There are different ways to do this.

Art students can be surprisingly good sources of original art. They will very likely be happy to sell you a painting or sketch for the equivalent of a couple of pizzas and beers. Just because they're students doesn't mean that their art is substandard. In fact, you may find that the piece you got will be highly prized one day when the student is an established artist.

Another great way of finding original art is to look for it when you travel. Most destinations have a flea market or a crafts market where local artists go to sell their work. You may even meet fellow travelers who pay for their travels by creating and selling art on the road. An original piece bought on your travels will not only make a great souvenir, but you'll have contributed to the local economy in a positive way.

Your children or the children of your family and friends can be fantastic sources of original art. With their no-rules approach to drawing, children can create delightfully colorful and surreal pieces that will get your guests talking. As you watch those children grow up into teenagers, you may also find that your framed drawing is a nostalgic reminder of how they once looked at the world.

Instead of original pieces, you may also opt for prints. Art museums usually sell posters of the works that they exhibit, so that you have a beautiful memento of your visit. Movie or theater posters are great visually too. You may be able to get these from cinemas or theaters themselves.

Photography is an art medium that is becoming much more popular and respected. If you can't afford a picture taken by a professional photographer, make large prints of your favorite personal photographs. If you find them too boring, play around with the different effects you can create with your photo editing software. Keep the frame simple so that the eye is drawn to the photograph. Create a certain rustic charm by using slightly worn wooden frames for striking black and white photographs.

There is no law that says you should only display paintings, photographs or sketches in frames. Framed sheets of interesting wrapping paper or fabric can be equally striking. Alternatively, box frames are one of the greatest ways to create striking pieces of decor. Use them for displaying objects like shells, feathers, pretty stones, your grandfather's war medals or even a favorite piece of clothing from your childhood.

Instead of focusing on affordable framed artwork, you may also focus on the frames themselves. A beautifully ornate frame can do wonders even on its own. Simply place it around a mirror or for something quirky, display them with nothing in them and let visitors admire their beauty.
