Fifty Shades Of Fun

By Michelle Acton

It involves a half century and the colour that comes second to goldthe not-so-critically acclaimed Fifty Shades of Grey craze currently sweeping women and bookshelves everywhere has been at worst one of the biggest fads of modern times and at best groundbreaking. It's broken countless records and surpassed many milestones, cementing itself firmly as one of the bestsellers of all time - we take a look at this king among novels, the effect it's had and why.

But what exactly is it that has captivated readers around the world? Why was the series such a global phenomenon? What factors contributed to its success and what have been the effects on women and sexuality? Read on for the discussion.

The story is focused around a relationship, an unusual relationship devoid of deep love and emotion, a relationship bound by physical contracts and one that is purely sexual. Critics haven't been too impressed with the quality of the prose citing this as below par and far from outstanding, however available to buy online there aren't many out there that haven't taken at least a curious glance at some of the most infamous scenes within. We won't be spoilers and mention how the story ends but Fifty Shades of Grey is a) far from the norm, b) graphically detailed and c) undoubtedly captivating.

Perhaps it is because the relationship between the two main characters is just so unusual, or perhaps it is the attention to detail that the author goes to in the intimate scenes but this book has offered at least some sense of magic to millions upon millions of people around the world.

The bold nature of the book and it's leading male Christian Grey has had the most pronounced effect on the female half of the population. A world shrouded in mystery and ignorance has been revealed in its pages and the fantasy world it has created has had arguably the biggest effect on female attitudes to physicality and sex. From a business standpoint the sales of erotic toys and other sex toys for women such as vibrators have also peaked dramatically as women everywhere rush to re-create that which they have read about. Sales of the book too, have been huge which will have had a marked effect on printers and bookshops everywhere.

It's an interesting thought to ponder whether the considerable effects of this book on society and attitudes everywhere are positive or negative. The overwhelming opinion and evidence though, fortunately seems to point to the former. Businesses in the erotic toy industry are booming online and societally there is a sense of freedom and openness when talking about intimate relationships. Perhaps this book isn't the best written, but it's certainly one of the best received.

This book igniting worldwide change isn't the first of its kind although it may be in the world of literature. Other torch carriers for change to have occurred throughout history include the suffragist and suffragette movements and also Nelson Mandella, the force responsible for the end of apartheid. The Fifty Shades of Grey novel is far less serious in nature however it has instigated a change in modern attitudes.
