Perspectives on Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi

By Martin Reynolds

The song "Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi" was follow up to the band's number 1 hit "You Give Love A Bad Name;" the song tell-tales the story of two people, Tommy and Gina, who are working really hard to make it on their own notwithstanding the relentless hardships. The song struck a chord on America's youth, most especially those coming from New Jersey. The characters in the song relate much to the working class aficionados Bon Jovi played to; "Tommy" who works on the docks, while "Gina" is working in a diner.

Jon Bon Jovi alongside with Richie Sambora wrote this with Desmond Child, who's a very much inexhaustible songwriter that was brought in thru the record company to help them to create more commercial sound, that's pretty much similar to what he did for Kiss on "I Was Made For Lovin' You."

The characters on the song, Tommy and Gina, were both based in a real-life situation Desmond experienced in the late '70s with Maria Vidal, his then girlfriend, whom he was living with. According to the notes in his Desmond Child & Rouge: Runners In The Night album, Desmond was formerly a New York taxi cab driver, while, Maria was a waitress in a diner.

It was Derek Shulman, who was also the lead singer and at the same time the multi-instrumentalist in Gentle Giant, signed Bon Jovi up to the `Mercury Records. In the 2009 interview with Derek, he noted: "Slippery When Wet was tremendously a well-constructed pop album. As soon as it's done, I knew that it was going to be this huge; because it was at the right time, the right place, and with the right artist. And I also had learned few of the business side, as well as having a musical background; I knew that it was going to be a massive hit. As a matter of fact, I have also put them up together with another co-writer, Desmond Child, who's very notable for writing awesome choruses."

At first, Bon Jovi wanted to depart this away from the Slippery When Wet record, thinking that it wasn't nearly good. Jon mentioned on a meeting along with a group of young adults which he has changed his mind after which had the single added to the album.

Richie Sambora had used a talk-box on this, which usually offered it a very distinguishing sound. A talk-box is kind of gadget that allows a specific guitarist to produce deformed sound effects using his mouth. Peter Frampton is amongst the popular talk-box enthusiast for his 1976 record labeled Frampton Comes Alive, however the method almost lost appeal some years later. When Bon Jovi released this, it was the initially the 1st time that the majority of teenagers heard the song that highlighted a talk-box. Peter Frampton builds Richie Sambora's talk boxes.

Bon Jovi later told Q magazine December 2009 regarding the difficulties of using talkbox. And so, this marks "Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi" huge success.
