Speed Up Your Music Production Time

By Frank Lubsey

One of the things that are important as a producer is speed. Creativity is something that happens quickly. If you've ever experienced a flash of inspiration, you realized that at times, it seems like a brief window to another world has been opened. However, this window does not stay open forever and if too much time passes, it will close. Thus, as a producer, it is important to work quickly and with speed in order to save time. Today, we're going to discuss some time saving techniques that will make you a more time efficient producer.

Templates: One really helpful time-saving technique is the use of templates. As a beat maker, you most likely gravitate towards a certain set of sounds and instruments that you really like. Why go through trouble of loading these up every time you want to make a beat? With a template, you can have your instruments pre-loaded every time you fire up your DAW.

Custom Drum Kits: One time-intensive part of hip-hop music production is selecting the right drum sounds for your tracks. Often, it can take many hours to find the right drum sounds that complement each other. Invest the time to develop your own drum kits that you can easily load when doing a song. That way, when you are in the moment, you won't have to spend hours searching for sounds that complement each other. With a few mouse clicks, you'll have drum kits that you load at your disposal.

Categorizing: If you tag or categorize your sounds efficiently, it can really save time in the sound selection process. For example, let's say you are searching for a lead sound to finish your track. If you have folders labeled "Leads", you can quickly audition these sounds instead of having to search through basses and other sounds.

Versioning: If you have a beat that you already like, another technique is to use all of the same instruments from that beat and make a new song using those exact same instruments. The song will probably sound similar to the beat that you made, but you will save yourself a lot of time by not having to search for sounds. You already know that the sounds you are using will complement each other.

These are just a few quick tips to help improve your production speed. Incorporate some of these ideas into your workflow, and you will be on path to becoming a faster producer.
