Guide To Tying An Urban Turban Neatly

By Claudine MacDonald

Clothing is among the basic human needs that have to be satisfied by any means necessary. However, the garments that people wear are influenced by various factors. The society has expectations that individuals are expected to meet with the way they dress. Traditionally, religion governed the norms and practices of various societies around the world. Some of these religions such as Hindu and Islam required individuals to wear headdresses on various occasions. This is where the urban turban originated from. It has become a trend in modern fashion being taken up by many people worldwide.

The headdress is a simple sheet of cloth that is folded into multiple wraps to achieve the attractive appearance on the head. To offer people the opportunity to customize the item according to their tastes and preferences, various alternatives of wrapping it are available. In fashion trends, the uniqueness of a product is one of the most attractive factors that people look for.

In production of these sheets, manufacturers could use different materials. Artificial fibers such as nylon and polyester and natural ones like cotton and wool could be used. The wrapping procedure begins by placing the cloth on the head with about 8 inches hanging below the neck. The longer part should be in your hand ready to be tied around the head.

Using your free hand, secure cloth on your head and then with the other hand, pull back the other edge such that it covers the rest of the head surface. You should not tighten the cloth too much since it may become uncomfortable to wear.

As you already know, the headgear comes with a slight tilt to the right and back. Traditional religious groups who introduced the garment preferred this look. You should have a mental image of what you want to achieve with the garment and try as much as possible to stick to the traditional practices. It is good to be before a mirror so that you can monitor your progress and achievement of the desired results. Very few people can master the art of tying the headgear without having to look into a mirror.

Like the traditional wearers, neatness of the turban depends on orientation. Though some may be tempted to try new looks, traditionally, a horizontal orientation is the most appropriate for it. Therefore, the last two feet should be oriented horizontally. The last edge also has to be tucked in neatly for the finishing. This is usually under the last wrap.

The garment can also be tilted in any appropriate direction to enhance its appearance. These tilts are responsible for creating variations in the products that people wear. The traditional look however is the main objective for most people.

Tying this cloth for the first time can be quite a challenge. It may be necessary for one to ask for help from someone with a lot of experience in tying an urban turban. With time, one develops skills in the art and can do it without looking at a mirror. A friend or member of your family could do this.
