The Correct Means To Read Music?

By Travis Ritchey

I'm composing this post due to the fact that of a debate that just recently happened in a piano forum I take part in. The argument was on the effective use of the words when describing reading songs, especially the term "sight reading".

If you are sight checking out a piece of music, is it the very first time you are playing it or have you played it before, and therefore are only reading songs and no longer sight reviewing it? Some in the online forum felt that using the term "sight reading" didn't efficiently explain the procedure I was discussing at the time.

I had not realized there were such strong thoughts around the means we describe playing slab songs, however I learned rapidly that there are even more than a few individuals with varying viewpoints on using words. I'll share both sides of the argument and provide my own thoughts on the topic.

Numerous in the music neighborhood view the term "sight reading" to suggest "checking out songs on initial sight". This may be your meaning also, and is frequently the end objective for anybody trying to check out songs.

Many websites and forums are committed to the capacity to play music at initial sight, a skill that is really tough to master, and can be frustrating, particularly for the newbie piano student. Most piano players need to play with a piece of songs many times prior to having the ability to play it directly with.

So this meaning would lead many to think that sight reading is an impossible job for the novice. I personally don't like this restricted view and therefore I often agree with the more general meaning.

The other side of the argument is more where I stand. The term "sight reading" to me simply implies "playing music by what you see" as opposed to playing by ear or by rote (mimicking an additional player, like on YouTube).

I do not make a determination about whether it is the first reading or the hundredth. In reality, I would specify one's sight reading ability not only by the problem of the pieces they can play, however also by the number of times it takes them to play it prior to the mistakes are marginal.

Even for a skilled pro, every added time reviewing a piece of music typically leads to more precision. If you could be able to play a piece of songs by spending 5-10 minutes with it, playing it through a few times and then able to play it beautifully, would not that be an achievement of your capability to review songs by sight?
