Facts About The Craft Of Glass Carving

By Tamika Quinn

Glass carving Alberta is a form of art that has existed for several years already. Who invented the craft or who developed it remains a mystery to the general public. It is known to involve blasting sand and other materials against glassy surfaces for images to be produced. There are variations in terms of type and among the most common are shading, carving and etching. Results may look differently but the procedures employed are basically the same.

The origin of the craft remains unknown to people but it has been recognized ever since the early 1500s. Traditionally, high-pressured blowing machines were what companies used in blasting sand to finished pieces. Modern carvings, however, are not blasted with sand but abrasive materials like carbide. The craft requires special skills. It is admired greatly by people as well.

The art is centered on creating looks that are three-dimensional. Such can be attained by blasting materials according to patterns. The abrasive materials are what will nick the surfaces of the glasses. These are what will cause surfaces to appear white. In order to create a 3-D appearance, etching and blasting must be done on differing levels.

Carving methods can be of 3 different types. Etching forms part of the stenciling methods. This includes blasting materials onto surfaces at one level, prompting the appearance of white images. Cutting is also known as applying materials using different levels. This is what makes getting a 3-D look possible. Shading is different as it prompts the glasses to appear gray and not white.

People who are interested in learning the craft need to take into account several factors. The most important is the equipment. Compressors and blasters are among the most important pieces. These items come quite expensive though but having at least 1 will suffice. Blasting cabinets are what will keep the materials contained. There are even people who will consider having blasting rooms.

When properly done, the end products will ultimately turn out beautiful pieces. Many people regard them as appealing art pieces with imagery carved on otherwise mediocre surfaces. You can find end products sold in gift shops. Others can be found in home depots as plates or as fancy windows. You can choose to delve into the industry and establish a business from it, earning heaps.

Before starting on with the project, it is important that people ensure they will be working on flat surfaces. Preparatory steps should be taken as well. These will include spraying the surfaces with cleaners. Getting the surfaces properly cleaned will allow etching creams to properly adhere on them. It is also important to make sure that the surfaces have dried down before continuing.

Crafters will also need to pick out great designs for their work. It would be best to use stencils because these already come with designs. Some people will look for stencils that have adhesive backing. These types are what will best adhere to surfaces.

Crafters also need to prepare all the tools that will be necessary for the glass carving alberta. They should prepare some safety goggles as well as latex gloves. Those with sensitive eyes tend to have troubles with strong cream fumes. People who are allergic to latex can use other kinds of gloves as well.
