Spongebob is really a happy go lucky ocean sponge who lives under water together with his friends and has many insane adventures. He likes karate, has a house as well as gets a job in the first episode.

Squidward
He is the moody sea animal of the cartoon. He works at the Krusty Krabs and hates being there. He also tries to make Spongebob's life as miserable as his. He thinks truly highly of himself and does not consider Spongebob and Patrick to be his friends.
Another thing which makes the animation so fun to watch is the fact that abnormal things happen that normally would be not possible. Some of these things are talking seafood and houses in which ocean creatures reside.
Spongebob's friends go through many adventures and the animation does not take itself to serious. This is a good thing, because there are many jokes as well as pranks that happen if you pay attention.
