The Jobs of Movie Executives

By Kenneth Shingles

Going to the movie theaters is one of the most time honored traditions here in this country. Though you may know that there are many people involved, many only credit the actors. Take the time to check out the names in the opening credits the next time you go to the movie theatres. Take notice of the important people who fill the job of producers and executive producers in the movie credits. These people are a big deal when it comes to the making of a movie; they are investors that create the film and have the money to put it together easier. There are often many people who are producers and executive producers involved in a film.

When the planning of a movie is going on, the producers and the executive producers have the rights to the novel or play that the movie is based on. The executive producer also usually is the only one who has the job of finding and acquiring investors. A line producer is usually hired by the executive producer to do the day to day activities involved in the film.

Before any filming takes place, the pre-production crew only consists of the casting director and the executive producer. Not long after that the costume designer is added to the team. The costume designer is responsible for choosing the colors, fabrics, and sizes to all the costumes before they clothes are made.

Once the director is found, the director will be the one in charge of everything related to filming the movie. The director is responsible for the film's look as well as the actor's performance. Much of what you get out of a movie is thanks to the work of the director.

The style of one director will vary widely from the style of another director. Some directors rely on imaginative improvisation. Other directors choose to write out directions that must be followed by everyone exactly as they are written. For a few gifted directors, the job of writer, producer, and director falls all on the same shoulders. There are some people in the movie business who choose to constantly work together; these teams will often consist of directors and producers or directors and cinematographers. To take it even further, it is becoming a trend with many actors to start directing films as well. The role of the director is endless; there are sometimes directors who create their own musical scores, while other directors choose to make only cameo appearances in the film.

When it comes to the making of a high end film, it is easy to see why the director, the costume designer, the executive producer, and other producers is so important. When it comes to making or breaking a film, the responsibility of the films integrity falls on these executives.
