A glue gun would be helpful but it is not a must. Paint the shells of the nuts by some varnish to bring the natural beauty. You can also varnish the ivy leaves and leave them to dry overnight.
You can make the wreath base from twisting some small branches together into a rounded shape but you can even buy ready made ones quite inexpensively also. Work your way around the wreath gluing the nuts in position. It makes sense to use the larger nuts initially and then use the smaller hazelnuts to allow fill in any existing gaps. Try and vary the several colors to make the wreath appear pretty. Beautify using the ivy leaves and finalize using a nice ribbon. The kids will have a wonderful time putting this altogether and will be delighted when people stop to admire their creations.
