Playing A Beautiful G Chord With The Vintage Rickenbacker

By Lee Larossier

For guitar enthusiasts, the G chord comes in many different forms. This is especially true if these notes emanate from a handcrafted classic electric Rickenbacker guitar. Here is a look at this fine instrument and how it has made history.

The 360/12 Rickenbacker is one of the most well-known vintage models. It has been seen with the creme de la creme from the 60s. Rickenbackers are a part of Beatles and Beach Boys history, as well as many others. Their unique sound is just as great inside the studio as it is up on stage.

Perhaps the most appreciated Rickys come from the 1957 to 1970 models. They offer an easy to play form that is hard to beat. Anyone that has experienced one of these "toaster pickup" equipped models will not forget the sweet sounds produced.

When the Beatles invade America, Rickenbacker guitars are waiting for them. The company sets up a special display in New York, just for the boys to try. John Lennon is familiar with their style as he already owns a 1960 acoustic model. The boys are very impressed with what they see, feel, and experience, and George Harrison agrees to add one to his repertoire.

If you look at past Rickenbacker users, you will see a "who's who" of rock and roll. Names like Pete Townsend, Joe Walsh, and Carl Wilson come to mind. You also will find these fine guitars in the hands of Tony Hicks, Suzanna Hoffs, and Steve Howe, and these are only a few.

60s rock and Rickenbacker have become so intertwined they cannot be separated. Their unique style and appearance is as classic as one can get. Pick up one of these vintage beauties and your G chord will be as sweet as 1965.
