How To Add Personality To A Classic Family Portrait

By Don Wong

You once again find yourself wondering what to do for your annual family portrait this year. You look back to your earlier portraits, and though the traditional formal setup turned out beautiful, it did not exactly vary from all the other portraits taken in the past. This year, for a change, you decide to get more innovative.

And then you begin asking yourself what themes you should adopt. To help you make decisions better, keep the following tips in mind.

What is the persona of your family, or probably the activities you love doing together? Are you lovers of music? Are you a family of travellers? Do you particularly love the colour blue? Do you have a particular TV show or film you all love, whose characters have their respective counterparts in your family? Are there any super heroes you are fond of?

Use this as your inspiration for your family portrait's theme. For example, if you are a family of globetrotters, you can freely add props such as maps, souvenirs, and luggage to make the scene more vibrant, interesting, and nearest to the real thing as you possibly could. If your family loves music, on the other hand, you could bring along your musical instruments and allow your photographers to get creative with them.

Speaking of photographers for family portraits, you also need to choose the best one for your needs. Photographers aren't created alike; similarly, something that seems beautiful for one may not ring true for another. This is where you should look at sample family portraits taken by a photography studio. From here, you could evaluate how capable they are of converting your concept in mind into reality.

Do not hesitate to solicit suggestions for other ideas from your photographer. Likewise, you can ask for tips on how to improve your own concept and make it more camera-friendly. The more the creative input that goes into the family portrait, the better it will turn out.
